20 February 1962 R-M was in space with the first orbital flight as part of America’s Mercury Space Program. To protect the Mercury 6 space capsule, R-M premium brand of BASF, developed a boasting exceptional heat-resistant paint coat – a crucial factor since spacecraft re-entering the atmosphere at high speeds are subject to extreme heat that, in turn, cause a significant rise in temperature. Piloting the capsule, astronaut John Glenn orbited the earth three times, in a total of four hours, 55 minutes.
